Clary Surratt and Kevin Pannell pose at Curtis Bartlett Fitness Center

In this episode of People, Process, Progress, From the GWOT to Giving Back: How Clay Surratt Builds Others Through Martial Arts, I sit down with Clay Surratt, Army veteran and founder of Guerrilla ATX, for a real conversation about service, leadership after the uniform, and building stronger men and stronger communities.

This is not a highlight reel conversation. It is grounded and honest. It is about what happens after the uniform comes off and how a man continues the mission in his next chapter.

Clay shares where he grew up, how his Army service during the Global War on Terror shaped him, and how that experience forged discipline, resilience, and leadership under pressure. Like many veterans, transition required clarity of purpose and intentional growth. Today, instead of preparing men for combat, he is building them up through martial arts, accountability, and brotherhood.

Martial Arts and Providing Counseling

Through Team Mannon Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Guerrilla ATX Club, Clay creates space for veterans seeking connection, men looking to sharpen themselves physically and mentally, and leaders who understand that growth requires friction. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu becomes more than a sport. It becomes a vehicle for humility, discipline, and community.

In our conversation, we talked about leadership beyond rank, supporting veterans in practical ways, faith and intentional living, and what it means to build men rather than break them down. Service does not end when the uniform comes off. It shifts. The uniform may change, but character does not.

For those in public safety, business, project leadership, or family life, the principles carry over. Accountability matters. Brotherhood matters. Intentional growth matters.
