When the Bagpipes Play: Owning the Moment, Moving Through the Weight, Anchoring What Comes Next
Loss in public safety does not pause the mission. It adds to it.
In this solo episode of When the Bagpipes Play: Owning the Moment, Moving Through the Weight, Anchoring What Comes Next, I reflect on the weight of losing brothers and sisters in public safety, the responsibility of planning line of duty death memorial services, and the emotional toll carried by those who step up to lead during these moments.
Using the Own. Move. Anchor. framework, this episode offers practical perspectives and real solutions:
Own
We must own where we are. Acknowledge the loss, accept the emotional roller coaster, and still commit to doing our part. Ownership means leading with care, planning respectful and honorable services, and providing staffing relief so affected agencies can grieve together.
Move
Movement is medicine. Physical movement helps regulate grief and stress, while movement toward a shared mission, planning together, standing shoulder to shoulder, and moving toward the pain creates structure and purpose when emotions are high.
Anchor
Connection saves lives. Pray, hug, cry together. Do not isolate or numb the pain. Anchor yourself and others through faith, peer support, counseling, and repeated check ins long after the service ends.
This episode is a reminder that we honor the fallen by taking care of the living.
