Get the Right People on the Bus

Get the Right People on the Bus was inspired by a clip from Nick Saban that popped up in my feed this week. In it, he talked about one of the simplest yet most powerful leadership principles: getting the right people on the bus and the wrong people off.

That idea carries straight into project management. You can have the best timeline, plan, and budget, but if the team is not aligned, progress slows. The right people bring accountability and drive. The wrong ones can quietly stall momentum.

As leaders, we should make every effort to keep everyone on the bus, to coach, mentor, and help people find their seat. But sometimes, people are ready to get off at their own stop, and that is okay. Recognizing that moment with respect and clarity is part of what makes strong, compassionate leadership.

Get the Right People on the Bus Before You Start the Journey People. Process. Progress.

You can’t move toward progress if the wrong people are sitting in the front seat.In this episode I talk about why choosing the right people matters more than choosing the direction. I share a moment when I learned this the hard way and how it changed the way I build and lead teams. We look at trust, readiness, talent, and the quiet signals that tell you whether someone is the right fit.

In this Focus Friday episode, I share how to:

  • Build teams around mindset, not just skill sets
  • Foster high performers
  • Address misalignment early
  • Lead with empathy when it is time for someone to move on

Thank you for listening and please share this episode and the show if you feel it could help others.

Godspeed y’all,
