PPP76: The Wit and Wisdom of the Little Gym that Could with Andrew Smith and Daniel Frank

Have you ever wondered how best to apply a choke while “Man Eater” by Hall and Oates is playing in the background? Do you want to know the difference between Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)? Do you want to be inspired by two BJJ Black Belts who grew a business, led hundreds of students over the years and worked diligently to keep their business afloat during the pandemic? Then this episode and the book ‘The Wit and Wisdom of the Little Gym that Could’ is for you!

In ‘PPP76: The Wit and Wisdom of the Little Gym that Could with Andrew Smith and Daniel Frank’, I speak with two folks to helped me start and stick with BJJ, inspirational leaders and friends Andrew Smith (remember him from ‘PPP08: Starting a BJJ Revolution with Andrew Smith‘) and Daniel Frank. During our conversation we’re reminded of Andrew’s early start with grappling as a high school wrestler, the beginning of Revolution BJJ in Richmond, Virginia in 2006 and are fortunate to hear more of his guidance and philosophies on teaching BJJ and on BJJ as a whole.

We were fortunate to also be joined by Daniel Frank and we learn more about his start in BJJ in South Korea, earning stripes on your mop handle, the importance of building up BJJ students and much more.

This was a fun episode that spans almost two hours. As a BJJ practitioner I may be biased, but I believe there is a lot for both BJJ folks and folks that have never heard of this martial art. For the BJJ student or even instructor, Andrew and Daniel share some best practices in bringing new people into BJJ, keeping them in the art and what their outlook is for Revolution BJJ and BJJ itself.

For those that don’t train BJJ, there are lessons on leadership, lesson planning, e.g. Process *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*, fostering relationships and as discussed may times on the ‘People, Process, Progress‘ podcast, the importance of staying dynamic during hard times.

I was thankful to reconnect with Andrew and Daniel, to talk through many questions I had as a brand new person and still have as a BJJ Blue Belt and to share their stories and knowledge with each of you.
