‘Sto-i-cism’: “an ancient Greek school of philosophy founded at Athens by Zeno of Citium. The school taught that virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge; the wise live in harmony with the divine Reason (also identified with Fate and Providence) that governs nature, and are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain.“

Virtue. Harmony. Reason. To me these are philosophies that 2020 America should consider as part of our after action report for the past year. Many have been without harmony as politics, race and other social factors have collided. Reason seems to have been brushed aside in place of fear in the face of the COVID virus and humanity’s in ability to talk to one another. If anyone turned on the television over the past 10 months it was plain to see that virtue was out the window as mud slinging and hate dominated the airwaves.
Enter Stoicism and Anderson Silver. In ‘PPP57: Stoicism for a Better Life with Anderson Silver’, Anderson and I discuss some of the foundational concepts of Stoic philosophy and how the information within his three books Your User’s Manual, Your Duality Within and Your Dichotomy of Control can help the reader bring Stoic philosophies and principles into their lives to deal with our current hardships and beyond.

Anderson also hosts a podcast called ‘Stoicism for a Better Life’, puts weekly articles and more. Anderson and I talk for more than an hour, but once you start listening I think you’ll find it’s time well spent to learn more from him and more about how we can be better prepared to face life as we consider philosophies developed a few thousand years ago that are still very applicable today.
