PPP52: P.O.S.T. Planning for Incident and Project Managers

Sometimes we are fortunate to meet icons in our give profession or industry. About seven years ago I was lucky enough to do just that. In the Spring of 2013 I completed the O-305 All-Hazards Incident Management Team course. This is the “boot camp” course for budding incident management team (IMT) members. I talk through this course a bit on a previous podcast here.

One of the instructors was Larry C. Miller, retired Chief Deputy with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, veteran of the Vietnam War as a Hospital Corpsman with a U.S. Marine Corps Rifle Company and one of the founding fathers of the Incident Command System (ICS). As a budding IMT member I appreciated Larry’s knowledge and as a fellow Corpsman I admired his service as well. Immediately I recognized Larry’s knowledge and experience as real, not just an academic knowledge of the all-hazards incident management principals.

So as I looked through the many reference materials I’ve gathered since I complete this 2013 course and stint as a member of a Type 3 All-Hazards IMT, I thought many could benefit from a tool Larry provided us called “All Hazard Incident Objectives Made Easy”. In this document Larry shares his insight on how we can simplify the process of developing our Priorities, Objectives, Strategies and Tactics or “P.O.S.T.” as it’s called in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) guides. More specifically, Larry provides guidance that many of our problems, issues, etc. for incident response will fall into one of six categories.

While the graphic above shows some parallels between the IMT and Project Management world, please take ~20 minutes to listen to this week’s episode as I walk the listener through a deeper, but quick dive on how IMTs and Project Teams can apply the P.O.S.T. process to be safer and more efficient.

Thank you for listening, please take a few minutes to provide a review and subscribe to hear more from me and my future guests.

Godspeed,

Kevin
